Tony Gaunt
I have a dream!
I would like to have a successful career, win awards, live on a boat, move to the South of France, buy a gorgeous house in the countryside and grow as an artist.
Is that too much to ask?
Meet Tony Gaunt, the man who can answer these questions as I have summarised his life.
Born in Yorkshire Tony grew up in Norfolk and studied Art, Ceramics and Sculpture at Norwich College of Art.
After being informed that he would 'never earn a living' as an artist he decided not to follow in his fathers footsteps and instead of teaching moved into the world of advertising as an Art Director.
Starting in Newcastle and moving around the UK and Europe Tony was involved with many household accounts including the famous Esso Tiger campaign.
From 1964 until 1978 he relocated to Brussels where he lived on a Dutch sailing barge that was built in 1901 and had the enviable ability to take his home and wife with him when needed in London, Paris, Oslo or in fact anywhere with a waterway.
During this period Tony drew and painted watercolours extensively. Literally dozens of sketch books were filled.
Sixteen years ago Tony, his wife Erna and their barge arrived in Sete. Tony was immediately inspired by the vines and the colour.
This recognition gave Tony his lead into abstraction. From the blues and greys of the North Sea to the vivacity of the Languedoc is apparent in his work.
Three years passed and they found their home, a beautiful home in a tranquil location. I would go so far as to say an artists dream.
Tony Gaunt works in his studio surrounded by the vines that inspired him on arrival. The layout of his home allows the visitor to follow his progress and changes in his art.
After 30 years plus of painting marine watercolours he moved into abstract. "I think Abstract must make a statement"
His work has a simplicity about it that leaves a clear mind, he has taken the colours that surround him and shared them.
After recently having a cataract operation, Tony has taken the time to rethink his direction and taking his time to see where he wishes to go next.
So there it is, all you need to do to live the dream!
